The X-Files Saved my Life

Hello Gang.

Much has changes since my last post and time and my brain has gotten away from me.

I want to just post up something to keep the gears greased and the pistons pumping while I am in a personal transition that has actually halted my personal production with New Monster.

The X-Files.

Netflix has all the seasons on right now and I am appreciative.  While I prefer the sweeter seasons of 1-5, 6-9 are the wacky - "Hey, we are losing our minds." seasons that happen to most shows after their time is up.  Lovingly coined - "Jumping the Shark".  Now, some of you might think that the X-Files had jumped the shark in season 5 with that awful awful Christmas episode...well, you are right.  I agree.  Great episodes are few and far between after season 4.

I was 12 and in the 6th grade when the X-Files made its way onto the tv on Friday Nights.  What a sweet Friday night it always was, too.  For a 12 year old boy the X-files was a dream.  I always dreamed of having a walk-on appearance on one of the episodes.  But, it never happened.  Of course I never really tried for a part, either.  The melodrama and sci-fi action was so much fun for me in my adolescence I would assume others had the same feelings for comic book heroes at the time.

So, now - I get to check out some sweet X-Files action and laugh along at the cheesiness of it all and now that I am older the mystique of the show is gone (except for the theme song! Oh, god! What a creepy/perfect theme song was that!).  But, I still love it and it soothes me in troubled times.  It helps me get my mind off of any problem I may be having and it works well with chicken noodle soup during a sick day as well!  I appreciate tv and shows that can lift us out of our depression, or funk at anytime.  X-Files just does it for me.

What show does it for you?  If any.  And if not - what?

The Gears are Turning and Steam is Rising!

Our Collecting Nostalgia Pilot has been out a few days for evaluation and so far the waters have tested well!

We hope to continue with progress and bring you all a show that just improves as it grows!  We appreciate everyone's support and look forward to sharing future projects.

Here are a few pieces of feedback we have gotten so far.  Enjoy!

#1
This chunk is from Adam's Grandparents:

I have received some feedback as well. This was from my grandparents.

"We watched! I think it was beautifully produced and thought through. I loved the scene changes. I loved the ending where the toys were put back in cases and put away and carried out. I loved the interplay between the interviewer and the collector and I thought the photography (videograpy) was very good.
Sometimes it was a little hard to see the figures. And for old fuddy-duddies like us, who did not grow up collecting those toys and who always  wondered what the appeal in them was, the generation gap kicked in and it was hard to relate to the collection.
But he did a good job of explaining why they were important to him. I loved the image of the little 5 year old in 'footies' playing with the toy.
I think the whole thing was really well done, and I hope you do more in this series.
What other collections do you have in mind? Go for it!"
here is more thoughts from another e-mail
"I wonder at what point a collection turns into a collection; there must be some decision point where he stopped playing with the figures and just collected so as to have as many as possible. I really liked it that he pointed out that the purpose of the toys was to play with them and many of them had been played with. I also wondered how he played with them. When I was a child we were all collecting playing cards at school, and we were trading them with one another. I wonder if he traded his figures? Did he ask for them for Christmas and birthdays? At what point did he become a serious collector?
Also I wonder if there is a down side to a collection like this. Storage? Expense? I think the narrator (who was really good) asked how his wife felt about the collection. Does he have kids? If so, do the kids get to play with the figures, or are they now simply a collection? Is there a missing piece to the collection - some figure that he would really love to have? How hard is it to find new pieces to add? How hard does he look? Does he go to garage sales or flea markets hoping to find new pieces?
Does he have any sense of the value of his collection? Has he researched that? Does he know anyone else who is collecting these pieces? Is there an action figure club?
Obviously this video is finished, but maybe some of these questions would be interesting for further videos."
END

Granted, this was family and they would love anything I did, but I thought it was good to see what a 70 something person's perspective is on the project. I feel like we had all of these questions at some point, but it just didn't quite fit the story we were trying to capture.

From Brian from the website http://www.coolandcollected.com/

Hi Ashley-

I finally got a chance to view the video and thought you guys did a great job!

Youtube is full of guys showing their action figures to the camera and talking about articulation and paint schemes. This new video of yours was a breath of fresh air. At times, it was more in line with what you would see on the Discovery Channel or History Channel. Those were my favorite moments -- when you were being interviewed, rather than talking to the camera, and when you were a little more subdued. It was almost like watching two different shows that had been spliced together -- one being your regular show, and the other being a polished cable TV show.

The camera work was really nice in the library scenes that showed off your collection, and I really enjoyed the addition of the graphics throughout.

If you are going to do more interviews, it's always best to let the subject do the talking. There were times when your partner was talking over you that ended up as a distraction. Usually, you can edit that out, but be sure to get enough footage so that you can do so.

You guys are really onto something great and I look forward to more videos. I'll put up a post on Cool & Collected this week and let people know you are looking for feedback.

-Brian

I don't know this guy's name but feedback is feedback and he is going to help promote so we are stoked!

I sent this to a guy who does a toy review show and his background is in video so I thought he would be good to get some feedback from, this is what he sent.  some good observations! - Ashley

I very much like the episode. I could be totally off on this, but I think the show may work better to focus on the toy line rather than the collector. I say this for many reasons. 1) I have a short attention span and 5 minute videos are easier to watch than 14 minute videos. 2) My favorite part of the video is you talking with Castle Greyskull about the features of He-Man and how it influenced other lines. I would like to see more of that. 3)It may be easier to find toys than collectors who can talk well. You have a wealth of information at your fingertips with your various collections already. I would have loved to have seen your Doctor Who pieces in greater detail.
Really nice job and I look forward to seeing more. Is this the first official episode or is it just a pilot? Either way let me know and I will try to promote the show for you through links on Articulation Times.
Good luck!

Wow!  Pretty sweet, huh?  That is just a little of what we have all been getting.  We appreciate anyone and everyone who has stopped by to check out what we are doing.  We really believe in this project and look forward to each episode!

TMNT Resurrection/Potential Childhood Destruction

Whoa!  Look at that title!  A little over dramatic?  Yup.

Buckle up.  I'm about to whine and cry and complain sarcastically about Michael Bay going anywhere near the new and (improved?) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  Watch out, kids.  It just may dip into PG-14 territory...

I have a very juvenile sense of humor.  Sue me.  One of my first thoughts of the TMNTs being Aliens was that would make them TANTs.  That's right.  Taints.  I don't write this stuff to win awards, folks.  I write it to amuse myself and sometimes others.

I am going to try my best to write a pros/cons way of looking at this.  I won't try to do it in list form.  I'm just going to free flow write it.  Here we go -

So Michael Bay is producer of the new Ninja Turtles due to come out next Christmas?  I have no reference to this so I can't back that up.  Read around.  You may dig up more than I have so far.  I am 30 - due to be 31 this summer.  I have never been a successful nerd.  I buy comic books yet I don't really like "Superheroes".  So I feel dumb and out of place in comic book stores around the guys who adore Superman and other tights wearing vigilantes from outerspace and other dimensions.  I like the horror comics and Howard the Duck.  But, I am not obsessed with any of them.  I have never been able to just hone in on any one thing I like.  I like so much but don't have so much time here on Earth.  I just don't get obsessed.

But, the Ninja Turtles.  THAT was and has always been a big deal to me.  How big of a deal?  So big - that when I heard about Michael Bay have ANYthing to do with the TMNTs my heart sank.  Who the heck thought THAT was great idea?  Didn't everyone see what happened to the Transformers?  I was never a fan of the Transformers.  Never was a car guy and robots just weren't my thing growing up.  I liked monsters and creatures and ... well...mutants.  When the Transformers movie came out I kinda' liked the first one.  Over the top?  Sure - but it wasn't unwatchable.  I never had any attachment to any of the characters or the stories from the cartoon/toy series.

But, the turtles were biological monsters that were funny all the time and kicked butt all the time and ate PIZZA all the time.  Robots didn't.  These creatures sure did and they did with gusto every Saturday Morning.  It was my religion just like so many of you.  The Ninjat Turtles helped me forget about my stupid homework I was neglecting and helped me realize that you could put ANYTHING on a pizza and it was RADICAL!  They taught me that bad guys were evil and dumb and sometimes you lost fights to them - but if you work together and you don't give up eventually you will overcome your enemies (life trials).

The TMNTs did this for me with violence, sci-fi, junk food and interdimensional travel.  I thank them for their devotion to weirdness and devotion to the Saturday Morning cause.  They were always four.  They were always brothers and they were always biological freak accidents ;Ancient Japanese warrior souls trapped in mutated turtle/human bodies.  Also, they were always teenagers.

Does all this change when they are an alien race?  Yes.  Humans have teenagers - aliens?  Nope.  Mutants are biological freaks.  Are bio-freaks a RACE?  No they are not.  Can aliens be ninjas?  I guess.  Can the aliens be turtles?  - Let me answer by asking you this...Are Turtles Aliens?

So basically what I think the only saving grace to the Michael Bay TMNT reboot/reimage is this.  They won't be TMNT the way I want it the same way DARK SHADOWS isn't going to be DS the Soap Opera for all those fans.  But, DS looks hilarious and entertaining and I wasn't an uber fan so I can forgive and forget.

The bottom line is we will have to do the same for the TMNTs in 2013.  They won't really be Teenage - they won't really be Mutants - they might be ninjas - and they won't really be turtles.  TMNT by name only.  I look forward to seeing what is going to happen.  I hope they look like this...

But I doubt it.  It would be wicked crazy if they did!  I guess all we can hope for is that there are a core group of 4 turtles that are brothers and they have the personalities we love about them as well as their adopted skill sets.  We hope for an awesome Casey Jones and April O'neal (Who I pray to GOD aren't astronauts!) Splinter better be there as well as the Shredder.  If not...I don't think I have any hope.  And please...PLEASE, Michael Bay.  Don't try to insert your TERRIBLE sense of humor into this one.  PLEASE?  They are ninja first and comedians second.  Don't ruin that.  Don't touch it, please.  They are all the same race, remember?  Don't make them come to Earth and try and adapt to the mix of New York flavor.

Oh, no.  I can see it now~!
Donatello - A black dude who talks jive and raps (oh please no)
Michelangelo - Super in your face gay latino
Raphael - MMA fighter / Italian
Leonardo - Brooding Emo/Hipster Leader / Caucasian

Please, Bay.  Please oh God no please not this....

Okay everyone, cross your fingers and wish real hard and maybe this thing will turn out really cool and our kids will love it and Ninja Turtles will be on top again...maybe...

But, hey, there is a silver lining.  Nikelodeon is pumping out a new TMNT cartoon that is like we remember but looks a bit different for 2012.  Sweet!  And the toy line!~  Mattel!  The toy line looks great!

MTV GEEK NEWS TMNT TOY FIRST LOOKS!

Teaser for Cartoon

There IS HOPE for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles after all!  Sorry Bay...can't win 'em all.  I have a feeling the kids out there are going to call BS on your movie next year.  At least...I hope they do if things aren't canon for the Turtles.  AS for me...until I see different - Michael Bay's Ninja Turtles will always be TANTs in my eyes.

Until next time,

Lucas

Wednesday March 21, 2012 : 4 Things - Flame War, Silent House, ipod Touch 4, and Jay Mohr: I Know Why My Parents Drank

Thing 1
Over the past weekend I (Friday or Saturday) I had a brief flame war with a dude that Ashley knows.  I made some silly flippant comments about the new Dark Shadows movie and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter movies that were posted on his page.  A buddy of his took exception to my comments of Abe Lincoln Sucks and Dark Shadows looks fun and isn't the exact source material because so many people have their fingers in the movie pie.

He said my statements (which all this is paraphrased) were inaccurate and wrong.  (About the movie industry)  I know.  I know it was a blanketed statement.  I was talking the Ashley and trying to get his goat.  Plus...Abe Lincoln Sucks just sounds funny.  Was I trolling?  No.  I was teasing Ashley.  But...other people read comments too and it is a free forum so - there.  I was a little annoyed but who cares, right?

I didn't mean to come across as anything but being silly.  Don't take it to heart guys.  I did for a few days - geez.  Why I do dat?  Anywho - I made an Abe picture that I am having trouble posting so just know I did one.  There.  Moving on to the second order of business.

Thing 2

Over the weekend I saw Silent House starring the lesser known Olsen sister, Elizabeth Olsen.  The movie is a thing of curiosity.  It seems as if it is one continuous filmed shot.  No second cameras just one single moving camera filming a young woman and her father and uncle cleaning up their vacation house that is in bad shape.  The movie takes a turn into thriller territory quickly as Elizabeth begins hearing and seeing things that seem to be stalking her around the house after dispatching her father.  Things go from bad to worse to that TWIST all movies seem to have these days that are either a horror or thriller in any capacity.  A simple movie built around a curious gimmick that works for the most part.  Elizabeth Olsen does a great job being terrified.
I am not sure what this movie is labeled as but I would label it either horror/thriller or thriller/suspense with horror elements.

Rated R and wouldn't be fun for kids at all.  Worth a rewatch...eh...maaaaaybe.  I'm hesitant.  It wasn't great and it wasn't horrible.  It was average at best with a gimmick I haven't seen before.  I'm sure copy cat movies doing the same thing are being edited as I type this.

Worth a look?  Sure.  Do it.  See it in theatres?  Nah.  Not too important.  Rent it - if not just for the gimmick of a one shot/camera movie with a great lead actress.

6.5/10 from Lucas   Here are some links for you to check out for yourself.    Other reviews and Trailers included!

Thing 3

I picked up an ipod touch 4 over the weekend as well.  Am I tech savvy?  No.  Do I feel WAY WAY over my head owning a nice piece of hardware like this?  YES! YES!  Do I love it?  Correct, sir.  I do.

By the way...this picture I posted is exactly how mine looks.  The ipod was quite the purchase and I am quite the bumbling fool so I felt it important that I throw down some more cash on outside protection for the ipod touch.  I'm glad I did.  The casing is a blue and black Survivor case.  A plastic shell that clamps over your ipod's body.  (It has a built in screen that helps protect your touch screen from your nasty fingers and scrapes - it responds beautifully.) The plastic casing is then covered in the black rubber.  It is supposed to help give it some resistance if dropped.  I read a review from an American Soldier in Iraq that had one and dropped it from 200ft down a mountain and it protected his perfectly.  Excellent!

The rubber covers the back camera - but has a tab that you can peel off and position into a slot for picture taking.  The bottom part of the rubber has tabs you pull away so you can plug in your earphones or power adaptors.  Note:  The rubber is thick so a thin plug is needed for earphones.  If you have a regular size or thick plug then you will need to remove the rubber and plastic for use. (hee-hee! Did you just read that SENTENCE?!)

The ipod touch 4 is fantastic!  The only other ipod I own is a Slim 8gb.  This one I got is a 32Gb (Great price for it - middle of the road GB seems to me to be the best value for these things) and it works super well.  I bought it (because the gettin' was good) for helping keep my content for New Monster fresh and as exciting and fun as possible.  It is a tool that will be with me for a long long time.  I can't wait to master it so I can bring great things to the projects!  Here are some links to the ipod touch 4!

ipod Touch 4 Review from Amazon.com

Survivor Case Blue/Black Review on Amazon.com

But don't take my word for it that these two products are great and worth the price.  Do yourself a favor and check them out yourself.  It may or may not be something you are looking for.  But, for me - they are perfect!

9/10 Review for both from Lucas

Thing 4

Over the summer I downloaded Mohr Stories from itunes.  It was Jay Mohr's (comedian/actor/dad) first podcast and first podcast episode of all time.  I was curious because I always knew him as What's His Name from that Thing?  I knew he was a comedian but hadn't heard his stuff.  I just knew that I liked what I had seen of him.  So I jumped.  Mohr Stories is now my go to PB&J of podcasts.

It always makes me laugh and it is always a good time for me.  I recommend going to Jay's site.  (I put the link above the picture) Go to the site and look around.  You will get a feel for who he is and what you recognize him from.

Use your new ipod touch 4 and download/rate and comment on his podcast and let him know you appreciate him.  If you find out Jay Mohr isn't your cup of tea - hey, no sweat.  To each his own.

I also just finished his book about fatherhood.  I liked it.  The book is not for everyone - but if you like Jay you will like the book.

I've included the link below the book so you can order it - might I suggest going through his webpage to get to amazon to find other things to buy?  Find out for yourself what is so hilarious and beautiful about being a dad/parent.

I found the book to be heartfelt and full of laughs.  It reads like he talks and tells stories.  Plus - it is uber cheap online.  You won't be shelling out all your dough on this one - so that gives you room to pick up a copy of Gary Unmarried!

Jay Mohr - 10/10
No Wonder My Parents Drank - 7.5/10

Have a great week everyone!  I'll be back soon,

Lucas

Friday - B.o.M?

Goooood Friday you Mutant Piles! (that's code for "friends"!),

I had an idea for some videos that I was going to do that were going to be "Editorialish" about random things I liked or was interested in...but came to the conclusion that I needed to beef up this blog and I wasn't prepaired tech-wise to take on that challenge.  I kind'a felt that the reward for the hard work wasn't going to pay off in views like I had wanted.  I need a bunch to feel like the effort would be worth it and right now as New Monster is just a baby...I am going to turn the idea into a Friday Blog Post!

Hooray?

HOORAY!

I call this idea - Box of Mystery

or B.o.M? for short.  So...when you see B.o.M?  You will know that something random is coming up and that it is Friday.  You will never forget about Weekend Eve again!  You are welcome.  And now...you little monsters...here is the first ever post for - B.o.M?

B.o.M?
Box of Mystery

In Today's Box of M?

I recently viewed the movie Young Adult.  Young Adult Info from RottenTomatoes.com

          And here's the IMDB page

Careful parents...this is a rated R movie.  It won't be fun for a kid AT ALL.  This ain't toys.  This one is for the adults that can hang.  (But, hey that is just my opinion.  If you want your kid to be bored out of his/her head and watch a dumb ole adult dark comedy then that is all you - do what you want...I am just putting it out there.  My opinion is my opinion.  Now then, I will never write that agian.  Let's keep moving.)

I was entertained and I had fun with it.  I also tend to enjoy a dark comedy more than most so it appealed to me right off.  Note: If you do not enjoy a dark comedy ever - this movie is not for you.  If you want a feel good comedy then may I suggest the newest Will Ferrell offering or the next Kristen Bell Rom-Com to suit your fancy.

This movie was penned by Juno Author Diablo Cody (Brook Busey).  It isn't all Junoy so don't fret if that movie left you wanting.  Juno was light hearted and sweet.  Young Adult is bitter, realistic and doesn't flinch when telling its story.  I'm not trying to blow it up into something that it is not.  It is Good.  Not a GREAT movie...but a solid movie that I thought was worth a couple of bucks to rent.

Is it rewatchable?  Yes.  I think it is.  I would watch it later on down the line if it hits Netflix Instant or Hulu Plus and other movie viewing outlets.

The movie stars Charlize Theron as a woman stuck in the early 90's who hasn't yet moved on from her teenage mentality.  Entertaining...but in a car wrecky way.  It hurts to watch a woman who is almost 40 still act as if she were 17.  Now, in her upper 30's she heads home to try and steal her ex-high school boyfriend away from his wife and new baby daughter.

Patton Oswalt co-stars as an old high school aquaintance of hers that was beaten so badly as a teenager for being "gay" that both of his legs were crushed and he has to walk with a crutch 20 years later.

The main characters are broken and lost and Charlize does a great job of making you want to avoid her at all costs.  I didn't review this movie in depth and the links I give will tell you more...but I just wanted to let you know that I saw it.  I liked it and it is worth a look-see if you can hang.

-Lucas

I give it - 7.5/10

Have a great Friday everyone!  Make good choices and laugh til it hurts!

Delay Isn't a Bad Word

Delay.  We are delayed.

Hi!  I'm Lucas from New Monster!  Nice to finally meet you.  I needed to pound out some notes and things here and get to meet you - so here I am!

Collecting Nostalgia has been delayed.  But, it hasn't.  We are working on our Prototype and it rocked us pretty hard.  This weekend we were slated to go to Knoxville and do a show with Brad and his wife but with family stuff and time restraints I needed to pull out of the date.  No big deal.  I had things coming up and I just didn't feel like I could give Brad's episode 100%.  I still was trying to figure out what I was doing for the show exactly and what I needed to bring to it.  I'm happy to say that I finally think I have it figured out.

We have some editing to do and some reshoots to get our vision as close to perfect as possible.  The first episode is coming along just fine and it is healthy and fun to watch!  I am so glad!  Well, the prototype episode is what I am calling the first episode.  It is loveingly labeled as #000 - just in case it doesn't go public.  Buuuut... it just might.

I tend to be VERY critical of anything I do and if I don't like it enough I am reluctant to move ahead.    Polishing a vision is a harder than I had imagined.  But at the same time the leasons we are learning are fantastic and we are having a BLAST~!

I hope you all are surviving out there.  Here at New Monster we are doing well!

Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming dates and shows.  We look forward to hearing from you and sharing our content with you as we grow.

Subscribe and like and tell your friends about us!  The more we share the greater we become and more powerful--BWHAHAHAHA!!!!...er...*cough*---uh...

It was great finally meeting you!
Until next time,

Lucas

Collecting Nostalgia Update!

Last night Adam and I put a rough cut for the first episode of Collecting Nostalgia together! I am really excited about how it is turning out and I think you guys will be too.

Seeing this project come from an idea to something that is tangible have been a great experience.  this first episode is a proof of concept episode and I hope it will be a selling piece to get others involved.  we already have 4 people who have committed to be profiled and we do our first traveling a week from this Saturday, and we are excited about sitting down with our friend Brad, and having him tell his story.  That is what we want to do.  We want to give these collectors a chance to tell their story as they see it.  A lot of collectors have shown an interest in this, because they feel they have a story worth telling. . . and we do too!

We hope you enjoy the finished product as much as we have enjoyed making it!
